Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate is a “buffer”, which means it is able to regulate pH, driving extreme acidic and alkaline pH levels to a stable, though slightly alkaline, equilibrium value. pH is therefore neither too acidic nor too alkaline. Notoriously, an alkaline pH is able to remove stains and smells much more easily than a basic pH. Usually, washing powders contain sodium carbonate, whereas liquid detergents do not. Therefore, by adding a slightly alkaline substance such as Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate to your liquid detergent, cleaning efficiency is enhanced.

Besides, Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate also gets your whites whiter, and to freshen smelly laundry just add some Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate in the rinse cycle. One tablespoon (25g) of Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate added to your hand wash or to the rinse cycle in the washing machine will easily remove odours and stains! Unlike perfumes, Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate does not mask odours, it neutralizes them.

Beware, though, do not use Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate on wool or silk!

These fabrics are extremely delicate and need to be washed with apposite products (which usually tend to be slightly acidic rather than alkaline or basic). Always be careful not to wash delicate fabrics with too aggressive products: the more alkaline they are, the more aggressive! This is another reason why Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate, being only slightly alkaline, is an ideal product, particularly for delicate clothes.

Moreover, Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate is a mineral-based, entirely water-soluble substance that does not leave any residues neither on your clothes, nor in the environment.

A longer life span for your washing machine! Use regularly Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate against lime formation and incrustations: your washing machine will last longer and perform better! No idea how to stop your washing machine from smelling inside? Just add some Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate (1/2 cup) to an empty, hot water cycle and any bad washing machine smell will disappear. Repeat if necessary.

Want to keep laundry basket smells down?

Dirty clothes are heaping up in the laundry basket? Unpleasant smells are invading the air? No problem: just add some Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate to your basket! Odours are neutralized – not just covered up.

Other bathroom tips

The bathroom is not only about smelly clothes. It is also about baths, basins, sinks, tiles, showers, and shower screens and curtains. To clean them all, use Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate.

Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate is a powerful odour expellant: therefore, to deodorize your bathroom drains and prevent odours from resurfacing, pour half a cup of Bicarbonate of Soda down the drain while running warm water on it.

To remove limescale and watermarks from your draining board or bath, sprinkle a small amount of Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate on a damp sponge or cloth, clean and then rinse thoroughly. Or leave Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate to soak on the stubborn stains, wipe and rinse clean.

Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate, beside neutralizing acids and raising the pH, is a slightly alkaline product, which means it has a basic pH. This property makes it also an efficient mold and fungi repellant and prevents them from developing in moist and humid places such as bathrooms. To eliminate mold from your bath or shower tray and curtain, clean them with a wet sponge and some product. Then rinse. Otherwise, prepare a mixture of 1 part of water and 3 of Solvay® Sodium Bicarbonate and rub well with a sponge. Also useful to get shiny taps!
